Published Work
Have skateboard, will travel: I’m a freelance writer and photographer based in Washington, DC. Recent work has focused on action sports, aviation, urban education, and rock & roll:
Action Sports
Dew Action Sports Tour, X Games, even a snowboard contest in Union Square, NYC: Many of my adventures in the last year have been financed by Lat34.com Action Sports on Demand. Follow the links to some of my favorites:
- Skate: Aaron Suski, Rob Dyrdek, Mike Rogers, Sandro Dias, Jean Postec, Jereme Rogers, Cara-Beth Burnside & Mimi Knoop
- BMX: Jamie Bestwick (Dew Action Sports Tour champion)
- Snow: Eddie Wall (winner of the Union Square Street Sessions), filmmaker Dirk Collins
- Surf: Filmmaker Gregory Schell (Chasing the Lotus)
Urban Education
From 1999–2005, I worked as a high school teacher at Maya Angelou Public Charter School, an amazing and inspiring school in Washington, DC which has informed much of my subsequent work and worldview. In ongoing support of the school’s mission, I write a quarterly e-newsletter, Seeing Forever. My favorite pieces to write are alumni profiles, spotlighting former students who are making big strides in the world: The most recent issue features Monica Keys, MAPCS Class of 2002. I am currently working on two larger writing projects reflecting on my experiences at the school and my life’s project of keeping track of my former students.
Aviation
Lifelong interest in aviation and space travel has lead me to work as a book reviewer for Smithsonian Air & Space Magazine and as a staff writer for Aero Magazine, the membership magazine of the National Aeronautic Association. Neither of these magazines publish online, so I am working to provide a few clips here in the near future, starting with this .pdf file of Aero Magazine, January 2007 (my story on World Hot Air Balloon champion John Petrehn is on page 24). Stay tuned… the forthcoming issue of Aero Magazine, featuring the Most Memorable Aviation Records of 2006, will be my first-ever magazine cover story.
Rock & Roll
Between 1999 and 2003, I wrote 124 articles for Washington City Paper. Ranging from 150 to 2,500 words, these clips cover punk rock, politics, and poetry in the Nation’s Capital. City Paper’s searchable archives will turn up each and every one of them for a small fee; I will be posting .pdf files of a few favorites here in the near future.
